Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Victory
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joined the Thunder in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning baskets deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their championship campaign with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.
Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, played a major role together with the game's hero.
"Grit and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or bad luck. We did sufficient defensive work to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Prior to the game, the team's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were awarded their title rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
The Pacers will have the opportunity to secure some early revenge on this Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Rockets are back on court on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.
In other action, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the road team.
Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
