Space Traveler Shares Depression After Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in different industries.
